Intersphincteric resection for very low rectal cancer

Intersphincteric resection (ISR) : an ultimate form of sphincter-saving operation

  • Intersphincteric resection (ISR) is an ultimate form of sphincter-saving operation which entails partial or total removal of internal anal sphincter with peranal colo-anal anastomosis.
  • For a selected group of patients with very low rectal cancer, ISR can be a viable alternative to conventional abdominoperineal excision with permanent colostomy.
  • Laparoscopic technique is very useful to facilitate this procedure (laparoscopic ISR).
